It was a happy 54th independence anniversary celebration for a 77-year-old man, Dickson Umukoro, and three others as the Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, granted them state pardon seven years after they were sentenced to death. The governor granted the four men state pardon as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 54th independence anniversary. The governor also commuted the jail terms of nine others from life imprisonment to between 15 and 10 years respectively in line with his prerogative powers as contained under Section 212 of the 1999 constitution.Continue...
Those released by the governor along with Umokoro were a 53-year-old Monday Tom and an unnamed adolescent. who were on the hangman’s noose. Others are Dele Mokwunye, Ufuoma Paul Eto and Moses Orakpor, Uche Dike, Jonathan Igbi, Chukwuemeka Igwebuike, Chijioke Edeh and Augustine Okoroh. He commended the Governor for putting in place very solid security architecture, adding that, “We have all the logistics to work with. We have all the enablement and we have all the support. “All we need to do is to work hard to ensure that this state is peaceful and open it to investments and continues to serve as a melting point where every Nigerian will have a sense of belonging.”
