Youths Protest In Jonathan’s Hometown Over Varsity Admission, Employment Quota

Irate youths from the home community of President Goodluck Jonathan, Otuoke, of Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State yesterday barricaded the entrance of the Federal University located in the area over alleged refusal of the institution to employ and give out admission slots to indigenes of the community. The protest, which started at about 8am, led to the closure of the entrance into the temporary site of the institution and the disruption of examinations for pioneer and 200 level students of the institution.

Leadership Friday gathered that the protest was called off by the irate youths following the intervention of heavy deployment of armed policemen, men of the Joint Military Task Force code-named Operation Pulo Shield, the Oloibiri clan head of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) led by Comrade Osaanya Osaanya, the Ogbia Clan head of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Chief Wilson Obi and the chairman of the Oloibiri Clan Youth Assembly, Comrade Ifiola Moses.According to the protesting Otuoke youths, though recruitments for employment have been done in the last two years, “we demanded that a total of 319 names agreed by the community should be employed. We also requested for admission slots from the university, and for a Memorandum of Understanding with the community on issues of employment and admission.”
