The president of the Student Union Government (SUG) of the College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo State, Comrade Emmanuel Emenaghamwon, and eight others are presently cooling off their heels in prison custody in Benin City following their arrest over a demonstration last week which turned violent.
Also in the school, the Coalition of Unions of State-owned Tertiary Institutions have announced the suspension of Mr Richard Amayo, Dean of Students Affairs and two others over their alleged anti-union activities aimed at breaking the ranks of the union for their personal interest.
Sources at the weekend, however, said the students decided to embark on the protest to draw the attention of the state government on the need to urgently address infrastructural challenges on campus and the quick resolution of the strike embarked upon by the Coalition of Unions of State-owned Tertiary Institutions in resolving among others, the payment of the 16 months salaries arrear owed it’s workers.
It would be recalled that the Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, penultimate week, while inaugurating boards for state- owned tertiary institutions, ordered the members to immediately investigate the demands of the striking unions and report back to him.
The students’ frustration, it was learnt, was also caused by their inability to write their examination, which according to them, may keep them in school longer than necessary.
