Abuja traders protest multiple charges by AEPB

Traders at Kaura Modern Market in Abuja have protested alleged multiple service charges by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) through the management of Kaura modern market, Berwick Nigeria Limited. Business activities were paralysed at the market as the traders embarked on a peaceful protest against the board.

The traders carried placards with various inscriptions which included, “Goodluck help stop corruption,” “Stop intimidating traders with mobile court,” “Stop poor management,” and “We pay service charges to Berwick Nig. Ltd not AEPB,” among others.

They argued that the multiple taxation contravened the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
The protesting traders marched up to DD 6 where a mobile court was located within the market to try offenders.

The chairman of the traders’ association, Mr Patrick Akudolu, who spoke with journalists, noted that the protest was to demand explanation from the AEPB and Kaura modern market managers on why the traders were being subjected to multiple charges for the same service already charged.

He disclosed that he had already written to the AEPB to seek explanations.

The letter dated 17 July 2014 was addressed to the director of the board with the title, “Does your Board now collect service charge in Kaura modern market Duboyi Abuja?”.

It read in part: “We represent the traders of the above named market, some of whom your Board took to mobile court for failure to pay service charges.
