EWOO!!! Mysterious Stray Bullet Kill 24 Year Old Pregnant Woman In Ogun (photo)

If 24-year-old Damilola Fajana had an inkling of any sort of danger awaiting her on Wednesday evening as she made her way home after a visit to her hospitalised husband, Bukayo, it certainly would not have been of the magnitude that befell her. With a single bullet which went through the windshield of a Toyota Camry she was in, Damilola was killed just a few steps to the gate of Beachland Estate, Arepo, Ogun State, where she lived with her husband. The bullet said to have come from an AK-47 rifle, went through the windshield of the car driven by one of her husband’s colleagues, whom Bukayo had requested to help take his wife home after the deceased’s visit to the hospital. It struck Damilola in the neck leaving her bleeding heavily till she was pronounced dead at a hospital she was rushed to.Saturday PUNCH learnt from statement made when the incident was reported to the police that the Fajanas got married late 2014 and that Damilola was six months pregnant. When our correspondent visited where the vehicle in which she was shot was parked, it was noticed that the bullet entered the windshield at a low angle almost grazing the dashboard. The windshield did not shatter. The front passenger seat of the vehicle was soaked with blood as an arterial blood spray stained the dashboard. The slippers of the deceased could still be seen in the car.Police records show that the vehicle was driven by one Mr. Akinyemi, who told the police that as they approached Beachland Estate, Arepo, they had no idea that there was an ongoing gun battle between oil thieves and members of the Oodua People’s Congress.“My boss had told me to drop his wife at home after she visited him in the hospital. The bullet hit her when we got to the gate of their estate and she slumped in her seat bleeding,” Akinyemi said in his statement to the police.Akinyemi was said to have temporarily gone into shock as he saw his boss’ wife bleeding in the front passenger’s seat.“He was so paralysed with shock that a resident had to take the car key from him and drove the victim to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her body was later deposited at the mortuary of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos,” a police officer familiar with the case told our correspondent.Saturday PUNCH was told that Bukayo has been informed of the death of his wife but has been in shock since the news hit him. He has not been in any condition to speak, a family member said.Beachland Estate is located about 100 meters from the Arepo creek where pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation are located, an area that has seen considerable violence and attacks carried out by oil thieves.Saturday PUNCH learnt that Tuesday and Wednesday, sporadic shootings rang out in the area as news circulated in the neighbourhood that OPC men guarding the area and some oil thieves were shooting at one another. It will be recalled that in March 2015, the OPC was awarded a multi-million naira contract for the security of pipelines in South West by the Federal Government. The bullet which killed Damilola came from the shooting,” it was learnt. However, national leader of the OPC, Chief Gani Adams, has said he was not aware of the death of a resident of the area from stray bullet, adding that some oil thieves were arrested by members of the group at Arepoalong with about 50 jerry cans they brought there to load oil in.Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident, told our correspondent that it was unfortunate that such act of violence could claim the life of a young woman. He, however, said it had not been determined who fired the shot that killed the woman.Meanwhile, residents of Arepo took to the streets on Friday to protest the killing. The residents blocked the entrance gate of the community, chanting and singing about the need to remove OPC members from the community.According to the protesters the Federal Government should handover the security of its pipelines to appropriate security agencies that “would not shoot and kill residents at will.”Meanwhile, a resident, who pleaded anonimity, told our Saturday PUNCH that those behind the protest were those benefitting from oil theft in Arepo.“They will tell you they don’t want OPC here but that is not really the problem. They only want the oil theft business to continue,” he said.
