Abia supplementary polls: INEC, military cautioned against manipulation of results

Ahead of the April 25 supplementary governorship election in Abia State, a socio-political group, South East Progressives Assembly, SEPA, has cautioned against electoral irregularities that might subvert the popular will of the people.Speaking against an alleged attempt by some politicians to manipulate the electoral process in the affected polling units, SEPA, in a statement signed by Ebere Uzoukwa and Munonye Maximus, President and Secretary respectively, alleged a possible collaboration between the military and some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to award Abia governorship seat to a candidate who the people did not vote for.

It said there were plans to divert the results sheets and fabricate outrageous figures that will award victory on certain candidate at the end of the day, adding that allegations of huge financial inducement by the said candidate to get declared winner at all costs should be thoroughly investigated by security agencies.

The statement read: “We have been alerted of a nocturnal meeting involving a governorship candidate in the state, representatives of the State Returning Officer, a former Chief of Army Staff, a former governor of the state as well as top military brass where a whopping N1 billion has been earmarked for the project, and we are genuinely worried because that is not good testimony for our fledgling democracy which we believe has blossomed.

“We are deeply concerned in what is happening in Abia State, as the actual criminal perpetrators are the ones crying wolf and pretending as if they are the victims.”
