Police arraign pastor, wife for beating up co-tenant in Enugu

Enugu State Police Command has brought a couple, David Orji and Happiness Orji; both of Enugu-South Local Government Area, before an Enugu-South Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a co-tenant.

The first accused person, who is a Pastor, and his wife, Happiness, were arraigned for allegedly beating one Mr Chukwudi Ugwu with a stick.

They, however, both pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against them.

The prosecutor, Osita Atama, told the court that the matter was reported at the Uwani Police Station, Enugu on February 26.

He said that the accused used a plank on the complainant and inflicted severe injuries on him.

Atama said that the offence committed by the accused persons was punishable under Section 258 of the Criminal Code, Cap 30 Vol ll, Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.

He objected to the bail of the first accused, saying that he refused to make a statement at the police station.

The defence counsel, Mr Linus Ebere, however, pleaded with the court to grant the accused bail, noting that the offence committed was a bailable one.

“The offence is bailable and considering the condition of the second accused, who is pregnant, and his husband, a pastor, I am very sure they will not jump bail, if granted, ‘’ he said.

The magistrate, Mr Kingsley Eze, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety who must live within the court’s jurisdiction.

He adjourned the case till March 30 for further hearing.
