IGBO leaders across the 19 states of northern Nigeria have declared their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate General Muhammadu Buhari urging him to save the country from the ruin it faces under the current government.
Yesterday, the Igbo leaders paid a courtesy call on General Buhari at his presidential campaign headquarters in Abuja and urged him to rescue the country from being run aground by President Goodluck Jonathan. They noted that impunity and indiscipline have become a common phenomenon in today’s Nigeria and need addressing.
Stating their case under the aegis of the Igbo Delegates Assembly, the group which was led by its president Chief Sam Demian Enyama, was also made up of its traditional arm known as Eze Udo. These included traditional rulers of Igbo communities from across northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.
Chief Eyama described General Buhari as a man of impeccable character who is disciplined and result- oriented. Dispelling religious sentiments against General Buhari, Chief Eyama urged Ndi Igbo nationwide to rally round him and vote for the general on March 28, saying that he would address most pressing needs of the regions in the country.
Speaking on behalf of Eze Udo, Eze Uche Egenti said that Nigerians especially the Igbo would not want to experience another civil war. He added that the country was heading towards the brink of collapse under President Jonathan.
Eze Egenti said: “We are here to support your aspiration to become the president of this country. We know that it is easier to work with you because of what you stand for.
"We are not ready to be plunged into another civil and we are pleading with you to help us organize Nigeria again, as we want discipline to reign again. We want to plead with you to help galvanise Nigeria once more and let discipline reign again in Nigeria."
Chief Ogbonnaya Onu who also spoke at the event, said the APC train was in motion and could not continue without the input of the Igbo. He also dismissed the insinuations that General Buhari was a religious bigot whose interest was to Islamise the country if elected president.
Responding, General Buhari who also preached peace and unity, recalled how property and shops of the Igbo communities in the north were secured during the civil war. He also dismissed the speculations that he was a religious bigot.
