31 prison inmates receive WAEC certificates

Thirty-one inmates of the Kuje Prison, Abuja, who sat for the 2014 NOV/DEC Senior Secondary School Examination have been presented their certificates at the facility by a representative of the Controller-General of Prisons, DCP Musa Tanko.

The inmates were sponsored by a non-governmental organisation, NUGA BEST, which paid for their enrollment for the examinations.

Tanko reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Prisons Service to humane confinement, reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.

He stated that assisting inmates to have access to educational opportunities at all levels was one notable way of keeping alive their hope of a successful return to the larger society.

He observed that Kuje Prison had continued to record impressive inmates’ participation in external examinations since the programme started in 2010, adding that close to 41 inmates have enrolled for various degree programmes in the National Open University of Nigeria Special Study Centre in the prison.

It was learnt that 38 inmates sat for the examination, and 31 results were released, while seven were withheld. Cumulatively, the candidates had 67 distinctions, 94 credits, 73 passes and 41 fails.
