The recent Chieftaincy title conferred on Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Abia state is reportedly causing ripples among the Traditional Rulers Council.Abia State government and Traditional Rulers Council have disowned the traditional ruler of Eziama Aba, Eze Isaac Ikonne of Aba-North for conferring a Chieftaincy title on Buhari.Last week, during Buhari’s campaign in Abia state, the title of Ogbuagu1 (The Lion Killer) of Aba Kingdom was conferred on him by Enyi of Aba.Speaking at a press briefing in Umuahia, Chairman, Abia State Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Eberechi Dick, said Eze Ikonne is not qualified to confer title on anyone on behalf of Aba, Daily Trust reports. He explained that Aba is made up of two Local Government Areas; Aba-North and Aba-South with over 400 communities.“Osusu, where Ikonne is resident has a traditional ruler and as such, he is not qualified to confer title on anyone on behalf of Aba,” he said.
Dick alleged that the traditional council was aware that Ikonne was influenced to carry out that action, while condemning him over what he called unwarranted attack on the state government. He disclosed that the matter will be investigated.According to him, the traditional rulers in the state are happy with Governor Theodore Orji and President Goodluck Jonathan “for their people-oriented programmes.”Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. ACB Agbazuere, advised Eze Ikonne to desist from his attacks on the state government. He therefore asked him to resign if he wants to join politics.Buhari commenced his presidential campaign in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on January 6. He has visited Bayelsa, Enugu, Anambra, Ogun and other states where he has been warmly received.
