I didn’t join presidential race for fame –Balewa

A Peoples Democratic Party presidential aspirant and son of Nigeria’s First Republic Prime Minister, Dr. AbdulJhalil Tafawa Balewa, has said that he did not join the race to acquire fame and economic benefit, but to advance democratic culture in the country. He also dismissed insinuations that he was forced to step down from the race or that he was settled to step down.
Balewa told journalists in Abuja that he stepped down for Jonathan so that the PDP would be more focused towards the 2015 general elections. He said, “Did I join the presidential race to acquire some popularity? I am not popular before now? I have lived outside this country; I am better known worldwide than a lot of our leaders because of the work that I have done whether in Nuclear Chemistry or Medicine. I have done well in life.”Balewa, who had picked the PDP presidential nomination form, later withdrew for President Goodluck Jonathan. While promising to abide by the PDP decision, he said as a loyal party member, he was ready to work with Jonathan to develop the country.
