The Abia State Command of the Nigeia Security and Civil Defense Corps has arrested three suspected oil pipeline vandals at Ahiaba-Obi village in the Isialangwa North Local Government Area. Parading the suspects, the state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Andy Dateer, decried incessant attacks on oil pipelines by vandals.Dateer said, “It is sad that youths, who should be concerned with safety of public property in their vicinity, are the ones vandalising them for personal gains.”...
He gave the names of the suspects as Onyekachi Nwachukwu , Nwokeoma Chima and Chinedu Ochogbu, 22.One of the suspects, Nwachukwu, in an interview with PUNCH Metro, said he was arrested while trying to market 150 liters of petrol given to him by a friend to sell.NSCDC also paraded three other suspects arrested while allegedly tampering with the oil pipeline at Ekeoba Ohuhu in the Umuahia North LGA.The suspects, Chikwendu Adimoha, Emeka Okaome and another unidentified suspect, said to have been hospitalised following injuries he sustained in a shootout with NSCDC operatives, were nabbed following a tip-off.In the same vein, NSCDC arrested one Justin Ogbuagu , while allegedly stealing diesel from a base station belonging to a telecommunication network.The NSCDC boss said the suspect was arrested on September 9, at about 2.30am during an operational patrol by his men.But the suspect told our correspondent that he was arrested after his neighbour and enemy accused him of stealing oil from the base station, an allegation that he said was false.The NSCDC boss, however, urged members of the public to always volunteer useful information to the corps and sister security agencies that might help track down criminal elements in the society, assuring that the identity of such informers would be treated confidentially.
He reiterated the determination of the agency to protect Nigeria’s infrastructure, especially oil pipelines.
