The Imo State Police Commissioner, Austin Evbakhavbokun, said that 62 out of the 68 suspected members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra arrested on Saturday were on Monday charged to court for conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful organisation and engaging in conduct that would have caused breach of peace in the state.
The CP, who gave out the 62 names while addressing journalists in his office, added that exhibits recovered from the suspects included Biafran uniforms, Biafran identity cards, Biafran flags and some buses.
He said, “The suspects were clad in MASSOB/Biafran uniforms with insignia such as Biafran/MASSOB flags, marched towards the Port Harcourt-Owerri federal highway, chanting war songs in such a manner as to cause breach of peace.”
It will be recalled that on Saturday, May 30, 2015 members of MASSOB and policemen clashed in Owerri, the capital of Imo State when they were celebrating their Biafra Day and remembrance of their fallen heroes.
Evbakhavbokun said that the suspects without previous notice to the police command stormed Owerri “to celebrate an unlawful function.” He described their action as seditious and unwarranted.
The CP regretted that most of the suspects and MASSOB members never knew anything about the Biafra/Nigeria war and wondered why they should be talking about it.
