Imo Youths Protests Non-Inclusion In Amnesty Programme

A youth volunteer group in Imo State under the aegis of Imo Youth Congress (IYC) has expressed grievance over their non-inclusion in the Federal Government’s Amnesty programme. The youths who besieged the Imo State Government House, Owerri on Monday with placards bearing inscriptions like ‘No Documentation No Peace’; ‘Our Name is our Demand’; ‘IYC Says Document U’; among others threatened a breakdown of peace and order if the government failed to include them in the amnesty programme.
The leader of the group, Mr. Bobby Uzoma said that since they handed over their arms to the government in 2011, their group had not benefitted from the Amnesty programme offered to militants that laid down their arms like their counter- parts in the Niger Delta.

Mr. Uzoma appealed to the state government to consider their demands with the view to finding lasting solution to the problems of violence in the oil producing communities of the state.

Responding on behalf of the State Governor, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Sir Jude Ejiogu commended the group for their peaceful disposition and assured them that government will liaise with the necessary authorities for prompt positive action.

He further assured that the present government under Governor Rochas Okorocha was poised to promote the welfare of Imo youths and urged them to continue to uphold peace even while they made their demands.
