A socio-political group, Concern Citizens of Abia, has accused the outgoing Governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji, of attempting to impose his son, Chinedum, as the next Speaker of the state House of Assembly. The group, in statement by its secretary, Mr. Kalu Kalu, said the people of the state would do everything to resist the move, adding that it was an attempt by Orji to continue to rule the state by proxy.
According to the group, three experienced lawmakers, who included Humphrey Azubuike (Abia-Central), Ikedieze Ezekwesiri (Abia-North), and Tony Mezie Nawubani from Abia-Central are the only ones eligible for the position of Speaker.
Kalu explained, “In spite of this seniority, the outgoing Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, wants to perpetuate himself in office by viciously pushing his son, Chinedum Orji, otherwise known as Ikuku (Breeze) by his followers, to stop the three ranking returnees and woo other elected legislators to pick him as their leader.
“He wants to overshadow the Governor-elect, Okezie Ikpeazu, so that he (Ikpeazu) does not give him the kind of treatment he (Orji) gave his predecessor, Orji Uzor Kalu. Regardless of his contentious victory at the polls and his status as a first timer, Chinedum is desperately cajoling the lawmakers, especially those from APGA.”
