Governor Rochas Okorocha’s re-election campaign suffered a setback on Tuesday in Imo State, as students of tertiary institutions in the state destroyed his campaign posters over an alleged disagreement they had with the governor’s campaign office.Daily Trust reports that trouble started when a group of students numbering hundreds staged a protest in Owerri, the Imo state capital, yesterday over what they claimed was non-payment of the N4 million they were promised for participating in a campaign rally for Governor Okorocha.It was disclosed that during the protest the students destroyed Governor Okorocha’s campaign posters, street lights and vehicles.It is understood that the students, who had earlier gathered at the Rochas campaign office in Okigwe Road, started destroying public property and pulling down campaign posters when they did not receive the N4 million hours after the Governor Okorocha’s rally ended.One of the protesting students, who claimed anonymity, stated that the protest was caused by organisers of the campaign, who ,according to him, failed to pay the amount promised them after the campaign.He added that they were offered N50,000 instead of the N4 million earlier promised.Commenting on the matter when contacted, the Imo State commissioner of police, Abdulmajid Ali, said that officers from the command had appealed to the students to be calm before the protest.The police boss added that no arrests had been made, and lamented what he called a desperation for power by political parties that was causing tension in the state.However, the senior special assistant to Governor Okorocha on media, Sam Onwuemeodo, reacting to the protest on behalf of the governor’s campaign organization, claimed that the protesters were thugs sponsored to disrupt the campaign.
