THE Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State said on Thursday that it had alerted the police and other security agencies over an alleged threat by the state Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, to mobilise against the party should it (PDP) insist on holding President Goodluck Jonathan’s state rally at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. The state PDP said in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the Chairman, Mr. Jerry Needam, that the party was no longer taking the governor’s threat as ordinary due to his (Amaechi) hatred for the President. It also alleged that rather than embrace issue-based campaigns, Amaechi had continued to cast aspersions on President Jonathan at the ongoing political rallies. The state PDP recalled that the governor had, during a radio programme in the state, threatened “fire and brimstone” if the party went ahead to use the stadium without approval.“The Peoples Democratic Party, Rivers State chapter wishes to draw the attention of the police and other security agencies in the state to the continued threat by Governor Chibuike Amaechi to mobilise his supporters against the PDP should the party insist on holding President Jonathan’s state campaign rally in Amasiemaka Stadium.“The party regrets that rather than issue-based campaigns, Amaechi has made it unmistaken to cast aspersions on Mr. President everywhere he goes for campaigns and as though these are not enough, has gone on Love FM Port Harcourt Radio live programme, Thursday, January 22, 2015 to threaten fire and brimstone should the PDP go ahead to hold any rally for President Jonathan in the state-owned Amasiemaka Stadium,” the statement read According to the party, Amaechi should note that there is a difference between him and the state and by extension, state-owned institutions and should stop acting as though these institutions are his personal property. It, however, called on the police and other security agencies to invite the governor for interrogation over his refusal to allow an opposition party to use a state-owned stadium for its campaign. It will be recalled that the state government had declined approving an application from the PDP for the use of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium for Jonathan’s presidential rally. The state government had reasoned that since construction work was still ongoing in the stadium complex, it would not approve the PDP’s application for the use of the facility.
