A 19-year-old man from Florida has been arrested and charged with sexual battery and child neglect after his 3-year-old stepdaughter died Monday -- just one week after the man married her mother. Pascal Kaufmann was reportedly babysitting the child Saturday while her mother, Emma Paige Liggett, was at work. He claims the child stopped moving, but an investigation revealed the little girl died in a horrific way -- and that her stepfather may be to blame...
Charlie Sue Ann Brame showed signs of recent sexual and "aggravated child abuse with severe brain trauma," according to the Orlando Police Department report. There was no way her injuries were consistent with her falling off a bed, as Kaufmann reportedly told police, Instead, they believe the man -- who recently emigrated to the United States from Germany -- raped and beat her. After Charlie appeared to be seriously injured, Kaufmann reportedly borrowed a cell phone from his neighbor and called his wife. His neighbors say he appeared "calm" and didn't want their help. When paramedics arrived, this poor little girl was reportedly struggling to breathe and had a body and head covered with bruises.
What makes this even more horrific: Charlie's biological father apparently begged her mother not to leave her alone with her new husband. He had found out that Kaufmann spanked his daughter and reportedly threatened to kill him if he ever touched her again. Understandably, he has chosen not to comment about this incident. So far, Kaufmann has been charged with child neglect and rape. He could face additional charges -- including first-degree murder -- depending on the results of an autopsy report. He has been denied bail.
What do you think about this incident? Should the child's biological father have a right to demand his daughter's stepfather not be left alone with him if he suspects he could be dangerous?
