The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it would use the opportunity of the inaugural Horn Free Day to honour professional drivers who had distinguished themselves in the state. The Horn Free Day scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, is expected to be a day that no motorist in the state will use horn. The government had said the initiative would reduce noise pollution, improve road courtesy and draw motorists attention to mutual respect for other road users.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, on Tuesday in Ikeja explained that as part of efforts towards the observance of the day, the government would honour “professional drivers who have distinguished themselves in the performance of their duty.”Opeifa said, “The event is tagged Drivers Appreciation Day to celebrate those drivers who have contributed to safe driving habits on the road. Professional drivers from private, public and corporate organisations will be honoured on Thursday (tomorrow).Although the commissioner did not state the criteria to be used in determining the awardees, he explained that the initiative was meant to ensure safety on the road.Opeifa said, “The state government is desirous of promoting safety on the road. We have set up the Lagos State Drivers Institute in 2009 to retrain, re-certify drivers and correct the deficiencies identified in drivers’ behaviour.“We have invited corporate organisations to nominate their drivers to release them for the programme. The best will be picked from them.”
