Abuja – The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) on Friday arraigned one Sola Ojediran at a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for cheating. Ojediran, who resides at old NEPA Road, Kuje, Abuja, was said to have been arrested by officers of the commission following a tip off. He was arrested at Utako, Abuja, by a team of the commission’s officers led by Superintendent Jane Asuquo on Sept. 18 and was taken to ICPC headquarters. The prosecutor, Mr Shehu Yahaya, told the court that the accused issued a fake Brazilian Visa to one Surajudeen Abduraheem and collected N180, 000 from him. The accused, however, denied the allegation and pleaded not guilty. Counsel to the accused, Mr Ikechukwu Nnemeka, applied for his bail in accordance with Section 340 and 341 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).Continue...
According to Nnemeka, the accused is presumed innocent until the contrary is proven in line with Section 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution. He urged the court to grant the accused bail in liberal terms, saying that he would not jump bail if granted. The counsel also told the court that his client was ready to provide a reasonable surety. The prosecutor opposed the bail on the grounds that the accused was likely to interrupt ongoing investigation by the commission if he was free. Senior Magistrate Aliyu Shafa granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with a surety who must be a civil servant not below GL 9. The surety must be a person who resides within the court jurisdiction and must provide to the court his or her last promotion letter. He adjourned the matter till Oct. 27 for hearing.
