A group, Abia First 2015 Project, has condemned the zoning formula adopted by the state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for 2015 governorship election, saying it would encourage mediocrity in the governance of the state. The group known to be sympathetic to Dr. Alex Otti, a governorship aspirant, also described zoning as retrogressive and anti-democratic, and argued that only the best was good enough for the state.
It said that the best could not be selected through zoning, but through an open competition involving all interested, qualified aspirants.
The group in a statement by its Director, Media and Publicity, Chief Nwaka Inem, said what was needed was a credible person to consolidate and build on the foundation laid by Governor Theodore Orji, who it described as having responded to the security challenges in the state, especially kidnapping.
The statement said, “We are rightly of the opinion that zoning as being canvassed by some opinion leaders is retrogressive and anti-democratic. Zoning promotes mediocrity and as such must elect a governor based on his antecedents and record of performance. It is against this background that we are strongly convinced that Dr. Alex Otti, will do a better job than all other interested aspirants.
“What matters is for Abia to elect a governor who will not only consolidate on achievements of Gov. T.A. Orji but open new vistas in the development process of the state.”
