A female medical doctor at First Consultant Hospital, Lagos, has died from the Ebola virus disease, Family sources confirmed on Tuesday evening .A statement issued on behalf of the minister of health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, by his media aide, Dan Nwomeh, read:
“The Honourable Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu regrets to announce the death, this evening, of one of the primary contacts of the index Ebola Virus Disease case, the most senior doctor who participated in the management of the patient, a female consultant physician. With this unfortunate development the total number of Ebola Virus related deaths in Nigeria now stands at five. The other two patients currently under treatment in the isolation wards are stable and are being taken care of.”
The statement did not name the victim, but it was learnt from reliable family sources that it is Dr. Ameyo Stella Adedavoh, who had fallen into coma for nearly a week before finally succumbing to the disease.
She attended to Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American who brought the virus to Nigeria, and reportedly discovered too late that the man had been infected with Ebola. Adedavoh, is the first doctor and the fourth Nigerian to die from the virus.
The other fatalities were two nurses and an ECOWAS protocol officer
She's survived by a son and her husband.
