Former governor of the defunct North-Western state and a delegate representing Gombe State at the National Conference, Alhaji Usman Farouk, has called on the President Goodluck Jonathan-led federal government to prevail on South-Eastern states to rescind the decision to register northerners residing in the states.
Speaking to journalists in Kaduna, the elder statesman said the decision to register northerners was unconstitutional, as every Nigerian has the right to live anywhere within the country.
“We are appealing to the federal government to stop this illegal policy. People should not be treated as foreigners,” he said.
“If the federal government fails to address the matter, northern states may likely start the registration of Igbo people and their assets. The northern states will reciprocate this gesture in the same manner. And if this happens, you can imagine how the country will look.”
He also said the federal government must pay back state governments the funds spent on tackling insurgency and other security matters.
“Northern states have spent so much on security, judging from the vehicles procured for security agents, accommodation and other things.
“In fact, in my estimate, between 1999 and now, the expenditure is about N3 trillion. This includes 18 states plus Abuja. Under our law, national security is the responsibility of the federal government; this means that whatever a state governor incurs should be refunded when the crisis is over because he had no vote for that purpose.
