Senator Chris Anyanwu (MFR), a two-time federal lawmaker representing Imo East Senatorial District, is at present consulting with stakeholders on her bid to become the first female elected governor of the state. In this interview with daily independent, she speaks about her governorship ambition,
when asked ,Maybe it is time to have the first female governor?
she replied.
It is well overdue but it may not be the first female governor, the first elected woman governor because there has been a female governor. People make a big deal of it in Nigeria but it is no longer a big deal. It’s been overdone. Some of the smallest countries in the world have had women as governors over and over again. Southern Sudan just had their first female governor and they are less than a year or two old as a nation. Afghanistan that is way behind in terms of their attitude to women; they were beheading women about eight to 10 years ago because they were wearing lipsticks or they left their face open. Today, you have a female elected governor. Iran, which is one of the most conservative in its Muslim beliefs, had a female vice president from 2009 to 2013, so what are we talking about? We should be talking about something bigger than governor of a small enclave.
Are you thinking along that line in Imo State, because there is this rumour that…
(Cuts in) It’s no longer a rumour; I will run for governor. I am consulting with my people and my people are showing me a lot of warmth and enthusiasm; therefore, I think you should expect that I would be running for governor of imo state.
